Yes the rooms are a little out dated but my husband and i love it! Very quiet. And right on the water. Sitting on the porch at night and just relaxing was the best. If you just want to get away and chill, this is a great place. We got more than what we expected. We will be back for a longer stay.
I guess maybe it's a blessing in disguise that we didn't stay at a hotel run by such heartless people. Who knows what the stay would have had in store for us.
And you'd also expect ANY hotel, no matter who runs it, to have some kind of cancellation policy, so you understand what you will and won't be refunded. But the River Wilderness doesn't have that. Hell, their URL doesn't even work.
When we got to Florida though, we realized my mother-in-law was much worse than we'd knew. Her Alzheimer's had greatly advanced, and she'd also fallen out of bed a few days earlier, and had horrible bruises and cuts all over her face.
Been visiting this location since birth. It is untouched and such a treasure! When you want to go back in time and experience classic Florida...this is the stop. Quaint and homey; In Touch with nature. Look no further than River Wilderness. Thank you for the best memories from my childhood and I look forward to continuing our family tradition with staying at the "brown houses" in Everglade City!
I told them this whole story. Basically, they didn't care, and charged us for a full night's stay.
When I asked to see a cancellation policy that justified that decision, and pointed out that you can't find one anywhere on any travel site, and in fact their URL takes you to a casino website, all they said was "we're working on that." How's that for an answer.
My family came down to Florida to visit my mother-in-law, who has Alzheimer's disease. The plan was to take a couple of days' break in the midst of that to visit the Everglades.
This was the worst place ive ever stayed in the maid and the maniger that rents the place was the most rude people i have ever encountered the lady at the feont desk got realy rude with my 11 year old daughter and my 12 year old son while i was fishing the rooms very out dated the ealls were realy mrssed up the wall paper was falling off the walls and the bathroom had mold on the cealing we wete told one price when we booked the rooms and the next day they charged us more there are no television in the bedrooms and the dishes and cups looked like they have been there since the 1940s we couldnt unpack any of our belongings because the shelves were moldy and falling down the place is so old that when you walk across the livingroom floor it shakes the whole place i have never been in such a horable place in my life who ever ownes this place needs to fire the manager and the house keeper we my kids were told by the house keeper that they were terrible kids because they were making noise and plaing like children do. Dont tale your family here especially if you have children i always stay at the rod and gun club but they were booked ao we couldnt. We go at lease 2 to 3 times a month i will be twlling there mayor and see if i can file a formal complant with someone for hiw we were treated and how my children were talked to when we they qent to the front office. I had 2 other familys that also rent villes from them that came with me and they werenjust as disappointed as we were
But all I can say to you is, steer clear. These are some cold-hearted people.
The rooms are a little dated, but the location is perfect for the glades. Would stay here again.
Given her condition, we decided to forego the Everglades trip. So the day before our arrival, I called the River Wilderness to cancel.
Now, I completely understand it's hard for a small family-run hotel when guests cancel the day before (and I booked two rooms each night for our family, so that's definitely a hardship for them). But I think this is also why you stay at a small family-run hotel versus a big corporate resort. You think they'll understand when a loved one is gravely ill. You expect some compassion.
